🤰 Maternity Insurance: Is It Worth It?
Let’s Break It Down!

With so many maternity insurance plans out there, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by all the information. How do you know which plan is best, or if you even need one? 🤔

To help you make an informed decision, let’s go through some commonly asked questions:

❓ What does maternity insurance cover?
💡 It typically covers pregnancy complications, congenital conditions for your baby, and sometimes even hospital stays.

❓ When should I buy maternity insurance?
💡 You can buy it between 13 to 36 weeks of pregnancy, but earlier is better for longer coverage!

❓ Is it worth it?
💡 If you want extra protection for unexpected medical costs, it can offer great peace of mind.

Every parent’s situation is different, so choosing the right plan depends on your needs and priorities.

Still unsure? Let’s chat! I’m happy to guide you through your options. 💕📩

Question 1: Do I still need to purchase maternity insurance if i already had my Integrated shield plan and Medishield Life?

🤰 Maternity Insurance vs. MediShield Life & Integrated Shield Plans – What You Need to Know!

If you’re a Singaporean or PR, you may already have MediShield Life, which provides coverage for 24 pregnancy complications like Ectopic pregnancy, Gestational diabetes mellitus, and Pre-eclampsia. You can check out the full list on the MOH website.

💡 What about Integrated Shield Plans (ISP)?
✅ Covers pregnancy complications—but only specific conditions like Preeclampsia & Eclampsia.
❌ Does NOT provide additional maternity-related coverage like a Maternity Insurance (Prenatal) plan does.

💖 Why Consider Maternity Insurance?

A Maternity Insurance (Prenatal) plan complements both MediShield Life and ISP because it pays out on top of these existing coverages. This can help with unexpected medical costs.

👶 Coverage for Your Baby
✅ All Singapore Citizen babies are automatically covered by MediShield Life from birth, including congenital & neonatal conditions.
❌ Integrated Shield Plans do NOT cover your newborn right away. You can only apply for an insurance plan for your baby after 15 days.

✨ Plan ahead for peace of mind

Question 2: How much are the premiums for maternity insurance?

🤰 Standalone vs. Bundled Maternity Insurance – Which One Should You Choose?

When considering maternity insurance, you have two main options:

1️⃣ Standalone Maternity Insurance
✔ One-time payment for maternity coverage
✔ Covers pregnancy complications & baby’s congenital conditions
✔ Coverage lasts 3 to 6 years
💰 Starts from $400

2️⃣ Bundled Maternity Insurance (Maternity Rider + Base Plan)
✔ Includes maternity rider + long-term base plan (e.g., life or investment-linked policy)
✔ One-time payment for the maternity rider, but the base plan continues for the chosen term
💰 Starts from $1,200

🔹 Which is right for you? The best plan depends on your budget, long-term financial goals, and coverage needs. Since premiums are customized based on your profile, pregnancy type, and insured amount, it's best to get a personalized assessment.

Question 3: I will be undergoing in vitro fertilisation (IVF). Am I still eligible to purchase maternity insurance?

🤰 Maternity Insurance for IVF Pregnancies – What You Need to Know!

Yes, you can purchase maternity insurance for peace of mind if you’re pregnant through IVF or assisted reproductive technology (ART). However, not all insurers provide coverage, and some may impose extra premium loading compared to naturally conceived pregnancies.

💡 Key Considerations for IVF Pregnancies:
✅ Choose a plan that covers IVF-associated risks
✅ Be aware that multiple births are more common with IVF
✅ Look for plans that cover congenital conditions & pregnancy complications

🔹 Best Plans for IVF Pregnancies

👶 Singlife MyMaternityPlan
✔ Covers up to 4 babies per pregnancy, including those conceived via IVF
✔ Covers 23 congenital disorders & developmental delays
✔ Includes stem cell therapy coverage
❌ Covers only 10 pregnancy complications – consult your doctor before purchase

👩‍⚕️ AIA Mum2Baby Protect
✔ A rider available only with AIA’s Guaranteed Protect Plus or Pro Lifetime Protector
✔ Allows transfer of life insurance to your newborn within 60 days of birth without medical underwriting

💖 Other Competitive IVF-Friendly Maternity Plans:
✅ Great Eastern’s Great Maternity Care
✅ HSBC’s HappyMummy, HappyFamily, and EmpoweredMum – Covers twins conceived via IVF

🔹 Lifelong Coverage for Your Baby
If your base plan is a life insurance policy, coverage extends to your newborn once they receive a birth certificate. Some plans, like AIA Mum2Baby Protect, allow you to transfer the policy to your child without underwriting.

Question 5: What if my pregnancy fails?

If a pregnancy unfortunately does not proceed as expected, most maternity insurance plans will continue to provide coverage until the end of the policy term.

What Happens in Case of a Failed Pregnancy?

  • Standalone Maternity Insurance

    • Coverage remains in place until the end of the maternity insurance term (typically 3 to 6 years).

    • Payouts may be provided for specific pregnancy complications or medical treatments needed.

  • Bundled Plans (Base Plan + Maternity Rider)

    • The maternity rider will end after the covered period.

    • The base life insurance plan will continue for the insured person (mother or child, if transferred).

Things to Check in Your Policy:

✔ Compensation for pregnancy complications (e.g., miscarriage, stillbirth, pre-term birth).
✔ Premium waiver options in case of pregnancy-related medical issues.
✔ Conversion to child insurance if the pregnancy was successful.

Would you like help reviewing specific insurance plans for their failed pregnancy benefits?

Question 6: What if my health worsens during pregnancy or if pregnancy affects my health conditions?

Pregnancy can bring unexpected health challenges for mothers, such as gestational diabetes, hypertension, or preeclampsia, which may impact future insurance applications.

What Should You Consider?

  • For Mothers:

    • If you develop health conditions during pregnancy, getting a new insurance policy without exclusions could be difficult.

    • Keeping your existing insurance ensures continued coverage without new medical underwriting.

    • Some maternity plans allow conversion to whole life plans for continued protection.

  • For Babies:

    • If your baby is born healthy, you can purchase a new policy to secure their coverage early.

    • Some insurers offer guaranteed coverage for newborns without medical underwriting, provided the maternity plan includes a conversion option.

Key Takeaway:

💡 Keep your existing insurance if you have pregnancy-related conditions to avoid exclusions.

💡 Another key takeaway is to review if your current insurance coverage is sufficient with a new life on the way.
💡 Secure a policy for your baby early to ensure lifelong protection.

What to Consider in Your Review?

✅ Maternity & Hospitalization Coverage – Does your plan cover pregnancy complications and hospital stays?
✅ Life Insurance – Is your coverage enough to protect your family’s future financial needs?
✅ Child Insurance – Will your newborn be covered from birth without exclusions?
✅ Critical Illness & Disability Protection – Would your policy provide sufficient support if complications arise?

💡 Tip: If unsure, speak to a trusted advisor to get a second opinion on your coverage needs.
